Hypospadias Repair

Hypospadias is the second most common birth defect in children

Hypospadias is a condition in which the urethral opening is not located at the tip of the penis This results in the development of an opening that is somewhere towards the lower surface of the penis, perineum, or scrotum. Hypospadias is known to be associated with other common defects like penile curvature (or chordee) and a hooded or incomplete skin.

Hypospadias is a birth defect in boys. It affects the appearance of the foreskin and the overall direction of the urine stream. It might also cause the penis to curve in the forward direction.

Causes of Hypospadias

Hypospadias is a condition that is present at birth (congenital). As the penis usually develops in the male fetus, specific hormones are responsible for forming the foreskin and urethra. Hypospadias occurs when the hormones malfunction, leading to improper development of the urethra.

In most cases, the exact cause of Hypospadias is still not known. In some cases, Hypospadias is genetic. In other instances, the environment might also play a role.

Diagnosis & Treatment of Hypospadias

With the help of physical examinations, a pediatrician can detect Hypospadias. The pediatrician might also refer you to a surgeon specializing in urinary and genital conditions, The specialist is known as a pediatric urologist and will perform an in-depth evaluation.

Various forms of Hypospadias are quite minor and might not require surgery. However, Hypospadias treatment in India typically makes use of surgery that helps in repositioning the opening of the urethra. If it is necessary, the surgery will also straighten the penile shaft. Surgery is usually carried out on infants in the age group of 6 months and 18 months.

When to Do Hypospadias Repair?

As we have mentioned before, treatment for Hypospadias in children is usually performed when the infant boys are between the ages of 6 months to 18 months. The repair is an outpatient surgery, so it’s not necessary to keep the child at the treatment facility overnight in most cases.

If you are looking for hypospadias surgery in Mumbai, consult Dr. Gursev, an experienced pediatric surgeon, to make an informed decision about your child’s health.

Risk & Recovery for Hypospadias Repair

One of the most common Hypospadias repair complications is the breakdown of the urethral reconstruction due to a fistula, which is a small abnormal opening between the skin and the urethra. A fistula is quite a common occurrence. If fistula occurs, pediatricians monitor it for around 6 months. Most of these will close on their own. Some additional complications might include:

Upon a successful Hypospadias repair surgery, your child might have to stay in the hospital for around 1-2 weeks. Your child can return to normal after 3-6 weeks of the surgery.
